How to Make a Custom Map Poster (Free, in 4 Steps)
A custom map poster turns a place you love — your hometown, the city where you got married, a favorite hike — into personal wall art. Here's how to design and print one online for free, with no design experience and no account.
You don't need Photoshop or an expensive service. With a free browser tool like PrintMap you can search any location, style the map, and download a high-resolution, print-ready image in a couple of minutes. Let's walk through it.
Step 1 — Find your location
Start by deciding what the map should show. It could be an entire city, a single neighborhood, a coastline, a mountain range, or the exact spot where something meaningful happened. Search a place name, address or coordinates and pan and zoom until the framing feels right.
A tip on zoom level: a whole-city view works beautifully as minimalist wall art, while a tight neighborhood view shows street names and detail that make great personalized gifts.
Step 2 — Choose and customize a style
The map style sets the whole mood of the poster. PrintMap includes 22 styles across five collections — Classic, Artistic, Dark, Nature and Special — so you can go clean and minimalist, warm and vintage, moody and dark, or vivid satellite.
Once you've picked a base style, fine-tune it: recolor the land, water, roads, parks, buildings and labels to match the room it will hang in. You can also toggle map labels on or off and turn on 3D buildings for a modern look.
Step 3 — Add your personal details
This is what turns a map into your map. In Studio mode you can:
- Add a title, subtitle and coordinates — perfect for "The day we met" or a city name and date.
- Drop markers on meaningful spots.
- Import a GPX, GeoJSON or KML route to feature a hike, run, marathon or road trip — see how to print a GPS route map.
- Plan a route with the built-in route planner, or add a QR code linking to the exact location.
Step 4 — Download and print
When you're happy, export a high-resolution PNG. Choose a standard poster size (A4, A3, A2 or A1) or set a custom size in centimetres. The download is free — no watermark and no account required.
For printing, send the PNG to a local print shop or an online print-on-demand service, and choose a matte or satin poster paper for framing. Standard poster frames fit the A-series sizes exactly.
